Bal Vatika
Balvatika in KVS
Balvatika is the foundational-stage preparatory programme introduced in Kendriya Vidyalayas in line with NEP 2020, mainly for children before/around entry into Class I. It focuses on play-based, activity-based and child-centred learning rather than formal textbook-oriented teaching.
Purpose: To provide a smooth transition from home/pre-school to formal schooling.
Age group: Generally 3–6 years, corresponding to the Foundational Stage under NEP 2020.Learning approach: Play, stories, rhymes, music, art, games, conversation and hands-on activities.
Five domains: NEP's Foundational Stage framework emphasises:
1. Physical development
2. Cognitive development
3. Socio-emotional and ethical development
4. Language and literacy development
5. Aesthetic and cultural developmentNo rote learning: The emphasis is on experiential learning and development of foundational capacities, not premature academic pressure.
Language: The child's home/mother tongue/local language should be used as far as possible to facilitate understanding.
School readiness: Balvatika helps develop communication, social behaviour, motor skills, curiosity, confidence and early literacy/numeracy.Assessment: Observation and understanding of the child's development are more appropriate than conventional examinations.
“Balvatika is an important component of the Foundational Stage envisioned in NEP 2020. In KVS, its objective is to make the transition to formal schooling joyful, stress-free and developmentally appropriate.
